Natural gas explosion devastates neighborhood near San Francisco International Airport
SAN FRANCISCO (BNO NEWS) -- A massive natural gas explosion rocked a neighborhood in the city of San Bruno in central California on early Thursday evening, not far from San Francisco International Airport, officials said. The number of casualties was not immediately clear.
A large fireball was seen by numerous witnesses around 6 p.m., setting at least 20 homes on fire. Officials said the blaze was caused by a natural gas explosion, not a passenger plane crash as initially feared.
First responders via emergency scanners initially said a 'large commercial aircraft' had crashed in the area, setting scores of homes on fire. But they later said the cause appeared to be a natural gas explosion and not a plane crash.
Both San Francisco International Airport as well as Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman Ian Gregor confirmed no plane had gone down in the neighborhood.
Scores of emergency responders were on the scene of the disaster, where officials said at least several people had been injured. The number, or the extent of their injuries, was not immediately clear.
The blast was so strong that residents miles away were able to hear the explosion. "We're fine. We heard the blast, and we can see the fire," a witness, who lives about two miles from the scene, told BNO News. "We're told it's a gas pump explosion by fire fighters going by."

Sapphire is a gemstone variety of the mineral corundum, an aluminum oxide (α-Al2O3), when it is a color other than red or dark pink, in which case the gem would instead be called a ruby, considered to be a different gemstone. Trace amounts of other elements such as iron, titanium, or chromium can give corundum blue, yellow, pink, purple, orange, or greenish color. Pink-orange sapphires are also called padparadscha. Pure chromium is the distinct impurity of rubies. However, a combination of e.g. chromium and titanium can give a sapphire of a color distinct from red.
Sapphires are commonly worn as jewelry. Sapphires can be found naturally, by searching through certain sediments or rock formations, or they can be manufactured for industrial or decorative purposes in large crystal boules. Because of the remarkable hardness of sapphires (and of aluminum oxide in general), sapphires are used in some non-ornamental applications, including infrared optical components, such as in scientific instruments; small, high-durability windows (also used in scientific instruments); wristwatch crystals; and very thin electronic wafers, which are used as the insulating substrates of very special-purpose solid-state electronics (most of which are integrated circuits).

During the summer of 1997, I had the opportunity to begin my research with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Pasadena, through a grant from Caltech's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships program, or SURF. My research advisor was (and still is) Dr. David Wald of the USGS. I spent the summer analyzing the foreshocks and aftershocks of the 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake, which was the last major earthquake on the central and southern segments of the San Andreas Fault. (This was supposed to be a small project before I started work on my 1996 aftershock research, but it turned into a major publishable project in its own right!) The procedure for this project was similar to my 1996 project, and it is outlined in another abstract below.
During the following school year, I continued my work for research credits, and during Summer 1998 I completed a paper on the study, which was published as a U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report. Since then, a more polished version of that paper has been published in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, a leading scientific journal in seismological research. I also wrote an article briefly summarizing the effects of the Fort Tejon earthquake,

We must keep our children away from drugs. You have known exactly how bad drugs are.
To Keep your Child Away from Drugs should be the single most important agenda that you today as parents of children above 11 must have because drug abuse and drug addiction in children is increasing at an alarming rate. It is a problem of not a particular class of society, of a city, place, economic or ethnic group. It is everywhere and is becoming everybody’s problem. Remember all children are vulnerable to the temptation of drugs. Usually it goes out of control before you can do anything about it. So keep your ears and eyes open and take the help of the following suggestions in doing so.
Never put your teen on the spot – if you think they may need the talk, you should bring it up in a discussion by leading into it. Do not sit them down and say, “Are you doing drugs?” This only pushes them away and makes them defensive and they feel as if you do not trust them.
Remember that children usually follow their family’s example and that they are likely to stay away from drugs if their parents do not use them or have an anti-drug attitude. Teach you children to be confident about themselves. Children who are confident will generally not experiment with something that they inherently know to be bad.
So, give a good example to your children and keep them away from drugs.
